Use M2M tech to create 'Smart farms' and tackle food scarcity

The world consumes nearly 3 trillion pounds of meat, fish, fruits and vegetables combined each year, according to figures from the FAO and IFPRI. In 2030, this number will increase to 4 trillion pounds. An ever-increasing population growth just means higher consumption – and technology might be the answer to meet this future demand.
Historically, agriculture and farming are sectors that happily embrace every technological advance that enhances production and reduces cost – something machine-to-machine (M2M) is very good for. M2M technology is a tool of proven effectiveness when applied to food production.
When it comes to agriculture, farmers face a series of challenges that hinder the production of food, from the lack of manpower, to inefficient technology, to the lack of information on weather, fertilizers, and humidity conditions.
These problems are easily resolved with the implementation of M2M technology; transforming a farm into a smart farm.
The solution that most directly involves food production is crop and greenhouse monitoring solutions. This technology consists of a wide range of connected sensors that measure different data such as wind speed, temperature, pressure, humidity etc. It then presents the information to the farmer in an understandable way that allows him to make important decisions based on this data.
Crop solutions, such as the one presented by Four-Faith, allow farmers to maintain crop temperatures by remotely covering or uncovering their crops and clear vinyl greenhouses at night or during cold weather. Before this solution farmers would have to cover the crops manually, leading to a big output of labour and time.
Machine to machine can also be used to control automatic irrigation based on the conditions of the soil. This managed connectivity solution alerts the farmer when an irrigation pivot is malfunctioning, saving enormous amounts of power and time spent checking the pivots periodically, hence improving profitability. M2M also monitors other data of the soil, such as ammonia, fertilizer and pesticide levels.
Farmers can also benefit from solutions of proven efficiency in other industries, like specialized fleet management solutions that allow tracking of the vehicles used in planting and harvesting, monitoring of fuel consumption and providing real time data of the location of every truck, tractor and machine in the farmer’s fleet.
Agriculture is a great reflection on how M2M acts as an enabler in any field it is applied to. Again, controlled automation is key.

Remotely controlling grain silos in Argentina

What? M2M’s role in agriculture. Remote control of grain silos for Fedea, Argentina (a major Argentinian grain and farm products producer).

The problem:
  • Fedea stores grain, such as soyabean, in large silos waiting for transport and distribution. Silo-bags are different from traditional silos. They offer quick but temporary storage and they don’t have any devices installed to control humidity or add dry air to the grains stored.
  • Spoilage occurs quickly if humidity and moisture is too high. This is especially the case with soyabeans and high oleic sunflower due to their high oil content.
  • In addition, the silobags are 600/700km away from company headquarters.
The solution:
  • Fedea had already installed weather stations in the farms near the silobags which are very useful during cultivation and harvest to monitor rains, air humidity and temperature.
  • However, the weather stations don’t inform what happens inside the silobags with the grains.
  • Fedea is now trialing the use of Four-Faith GPRS modules installed in the silobag with four different sensors measuring temperature, humidity, CO2 and O2.
  • They are integrated into a cloud-based platform which allows the customer to monitor the grains inside the silos online and configure alarms if humidity levels get too high.
Benefits: Grain quality control, reduced loss of cereal due to quality issues, better logistics for exportation and more information on what happens inside the silo bags without having to travel 700km to check them

By 2015 over six billion objects in the world will be connected to the internet. The explosion of M2M communications, creating what is known as the Internet of Things, is set to fundamentally transform almost every aspect of human society and disrupt every industry it touches.

We see it as the biggest growth opportunity in the market and aim for M2M to represent between €0.5bn to €0.8bn in revenue for the company by 2015. What really excites me about the field however is the staggering potential of this technology to transform society and help create a more efficient, more sustainable world.
M2M is set to transform every industry, from agriculture to fleet management, by enabling complete control over every aspect of the supply chain and hence reducing inefficiencies. At the same time, the technology offers huge benefits in increasing sustainability, from reducing food wastage to dramatically curbing energy consumption.

Smart Streetlights environmentally friendly and energy saving

Have you ever left the lights on in your house for days at a time and then gotten a ridiculously crazy electric bill the next month? Can you imagine how much cities have to pay to keep all the street lights on and maintained every day? The cost is astronomical, but it could be diminished quite a bit due to Dutch designer Christian Shuh’s new streetlight design called Tvilight .
Christian Shuh’s new streetlights are designed to light up only it senses people around through its wireless sensors. When people aren’t around, the streetlight dims, using the least amount of power possible while still lighting the street enough for oncoming vehicles and pedestrians to see where they’re going. The system is designed to recognize the difference between people and animals, so it won’t cut on unnecessarily.

Europe currently spends about $13 billion a year to keep streetlights on, which accounts for more than 40% of its total energy bill. On top of that, Europe’s streetlights emit 40 million tons of CO2 each year, which is equivalent to an extra 20 million vehicles. Shuh’s design could drastically reduce the entire continent’s energy cost and CO2 emissions at the same time.
These lights have already been implemented in a few municipalities in Holland and one in Ireland. Multiple countries, including the United States, have expressed interest in implementing the design. Hopefully in a few years the entire world can be optimally fit with lights that don’t waste energy like the ones we use today.

Scientists proposed "smart dust" concept, the future can real-time monitoring brain activity

In recent years, such as magnetic resonance imaging and positron imaging techniques can help people understand the real movement of the brain, they still exist several shortcomings, such as the radiation on the human body, and the image non-HD resolution, etc.. Recently, the University of California at Berkeley, researchers came up with the real-time observation of the human brain exercise methods - "smart dust."

Researchers point out, first of all they toward the cortex of the brain jet micro-electronic sensors which is as small as dust particles- "nervous dust" and then by ultrasound to supply power for these "dust" and remote control. According to the reports, each of the "nerve dust" is installed CMOS circuits , they are responsible for detecting the electrical activity of nearby nerves.

"Nervous Dust" is just a concept, not real. Now, they have to do is to create one of only 100 microns, can be in the noisy and warm environment of the body to send and receive signals particles. In addition, such a sensor also need to be connected to a piezo system so that it can put ultrasound into electronic signals. Of course, the system must satisfy two conditions: to provide sufficient voltage for the formation of ultrasound; but not affect on the brain.

Gas Station Data Communication Based on GPRS

1.      Preface

With the fast-growing of Chinese economy and transportation infrastructure, more and more people have their own auto, at the same time, more and more logistics company has been set up to focus on the transportation of cargos, which contribute too much to economy and people’s life. As we all know, oil is the essential materials of auto, truck, etc., in this case, gas station has played an important role on the vehicle. With the popularity of gas station national wide, how to monitor and manage the gas stations anywhere has become a tough topic to the oil companies in China.

Traditional gas station information system is hard to meet current need of security of data transmission and data storage, which real time, fast and wide range data transmission among all gas station is needed. Thus, a solution based on GPRS network has been found to solve this problem.

Gas station data acquisition terminals are connected with Four-Faith GPRS IP Modem F2103 via RS232 or RS485, and public IP, APN and ADSL can be used for accessing internet for data center.

When F2103 is connected with server of data center based on GPRS, a TCP/IP connectivity tunnel will be established for transparent data transmission. So once F2103 get the data from data acquisition terminals, data will be transferred to server of data center, also, the data acquisition terminals can communicate with the server via F2103.

ability .So that we can protect people’s lives and property after getting the early warning information.

2.1 System components 
Hydrology and watershed management, flood control and monitoring system by the center, sub-centers (county and city) stations, field units constitute a set of three hydrological telemetry network. The completion of the system will improve the hydrological information collection, transmission and processing methods, data collection and reduce the time required to forecast operations, improve the reliability of information collection and transmission, information processing capabilities to improve flood control basin.
